Taking a Leap of Faith

On October 25, 2018, Matthew went home happy with a new marvel leg. Unfortunately, the following day was a different story, he would not wear the leg. It was a bad day in the Kruchten household. Matthew went back to wearing his old leg. I felt so lost. It has been a long time since I felt this way as well as confused. Matthew did so good the other day. I kept asking myself “Why? What Happened?” Mostly, I was frustrated at the thought of having to drive back to Chicago for another appointment.

Ironically, I met a friend, Kerri Gorecki, in this wonderful amputee community who happened to reach out to me while I was having a bad day. She found a new prosthetist in Joliet for her boys. AMAZING NEWS! Since Joliet is only 20 minutes from me. Kerri said she just met David Rotter who is a prosthetist and wanted me to give him a call. She believes he could help.

What to do…

New doctor, new location, insurance coverage. I already signed the delivery paperwork for the leg which means the $35K leg is now ours and insurance will not approve another leg this soon. Now, I know the new leg is covered under warranty and I also know Shirley Ryan Ability Lab would make it right OR we go down an unknown road. So many decisions and no time to think let alone look into David Rotter’s credentials at the moment as everyone in the Kruchten household has somewhere to be.

So I called and David offered to make Matthew a leg out of pocket using parts from the marvel leg to reconstruct a new leg. Unbelievable!!! The kindness to offer such a thing, but how can I accept such a gift. Needless to say, I had a lot on my mind. And how can I get my insurance company to pay for this. 🤯

After speaking with David Rotter, I went to see Dr. Ackman and nurse Kathy (Matthew’s surgeon and nurse) who spoke highly of Dave Rotter. As soon as I got home, I did my research on Mr. Rotter and went into a state of shock. Matthew has the best Prosthetist in the industry and he is only 20 mins away! How did this happen! My prayers have been answered. I definitely said some gratitude prayers that night!

Leg Journey

On November 1, 2018, Matthew Legstrong started his leg journey with David Rotter Prosthetics. We discussed with David, the discomfort Matthew had with the marvel leg and how to make the necessary changes. David proposed making a new leg by using parts from the marvel leg. So he casted Matthew up and used his tickle machine to remove the cast.

David nicknamed Matthew “Matt the Man” and Matthew had fun being his silly self with Dave.

I left the appointment feeling like I was where I was supposed to be. 😊

On Matthew’s next appointment, some adjustments were needed on his old leg to get by until his new leg was ready. While waiting at Rotter Prosthetics we met silver medalist Hailey Banz! And now my future Olympian is already taking pics with Olympian’s!

Hailey, your story is very inspiring!

Also, during this appointment, David introduced Matthew to everyone in his office. Matthew LOVED seeing other people like him!

On November 27, 2018, Matthew had his final leg appointment and is taking a stroll for the first time on his new leg in Dave’s new office!

What makes you different makes you beautiful!

Running for the first time with his new leg.

“Dave the man!”

Grateful, thankful, blessed!

Dave says “Matt the Man”, but I say “Dave the man!”

During our visit to Rotter Prosthetics, Matthew also met a new friend, Ben. Ben was also born with Fibular Hemimelia and has super cool marvel comic strip legs. He is currently doing an internship at Rotter Prosthetics and for his first project he is making himself legs like Matthew’s! So cool! I can’t wait to see the final outcome!

You’re going to do a fine Job Ben!

Needless to say Matt the Man, Dave the Man, Ben and myself had an awesome day together. Looking forward to hanging out in Dave’s new office soon.
